Our top tips for making your home more eco friendly

Australia 🇦🇺 it’s the greatest country on earth.

Sadly though it’s not the most sustainable.

Did you know that (on average) each Australian produces 540kg of waste per year, and of the estimated 67 million tonnes just 37 tonnes is recycled.

Here at Hera Lane we are so passionate about reducing waste and limiting our impact on the environment, so that’s why this year we will be sharing lots of simple and easy tips to help Aussie families make their homes more sustainable in 2022.

Tip #1: Make simple swaps with every day cleaning products.

Compostable sponges are made from toxin free renewables and some brands are 100% plastic free

Tip #2: Make your own non toxic cleaning products with everyday pantry items.

Try using baking soda & vingegar to clean bathroom & kitchen sinks, the dishwasher (when it get's a bit smelly just pop them in and run a wash cycle) or try adding hot water to clean your drains.

Directions:

-Pour boiling water down the drain

-Follow by pouring in 1 cup of Baking Soda & 1 cup of Vinegar

-Wait 5 to 10 mins

-Finish by pouring more boiling water in the drain & viola!

Tip #3: Wash using cold water

Don’t stress we aren’t suggesting that you start diving into cold showers first thing in the morning! But doing your laundry in cold water will definetly make an impact on your households energy use. Up to 90% of the energy used by your washing machine goes towards heating the water, so get using that cold setting 💦

Tip #4: Make your own cleaning products

Most cleaning products come in disposable plastic containers and half of them contain toxic chemicals that we can’t even say! You can find lots of great recipes for universal cleaners online or for a quick and simple room spray try.

Mixture:

-In a metal spray bottle pour 2 & 1/2 cups of warm water

- 1/4 Cup of Vinegar

- A dash of dishwashing liquid

Tip #5: Shop with companies that reuse and recycle

Brit uses @TheDirtCompany laundry liquid because they are consious about what your washing sends back to the ocean.  Not only is the laundry liquid eco friendly but they also offer a re-fill program. This means that you can send your empty packs back after and they will refill them for you.

Here at Hera Lane we truely believe that small simple swaps can amount to making a huge impact in your home and on the planet. Follow us on Instagram for more eco friendly tips!
